3 Simple Teeth Whitening Treatments That Can be Done at Home

There are teeth whitening treatments that you can do at home when you have a little bit of time. This is great because many people are looking for simple ways to restore their teeth when they lose their pearly white color.

Teeth become discolored due to aging, smoking, medication and food stains. Fortunately, this kind of discoloration rarely penetrates the surface of the tooth, making them easy to remove with at-home remedies.

Find out how you can make your teeth whiter, right from the comfort of your home.

Popular at-home teeth whitening treatments

1. Clean your teeth with hydrogen peroxide

Peroxide is in many households since it is commonly used as a disinfectant or a mild bleach. That said, hydrogen peroxide can remove stains from teeth. Here is how to whiten your teeth with hydrogen peroxide:

  • Make a paste by mixing two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide with a tablespoon of baking soda
  • Use the paste to brush the teeth; the baking soda will scrub the teeth while the peroxide will bleach the teeth
  • Let the paste sit on the teeth for one minute before rinsing
  • Rinse the teeth and mouth thoroughly, making sure to remove all hydrogen peroxide from the mouth

The peroxide paste should be used twice a day for a week, but do not make it a substitute for regular brushing. Only repeat the process after a couple of months and only if it is necessary.

2. Scrub the teeth with baking soda

  • Make a paste by mixing half a teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of water
  • Apply the paste to the teeth using a toothbrush or a finger
  • Let the baking soda sit on the teeth for a minute or two before scrubbing the teeth
  • If there is a pronounced stain on the teeth, apply a blob of the paste directly onto the stain, let it sit for two minutes and then scrub the stain away

Baking soda is a mild abrasive. It whitens the teeth by scraping stains off the enamel. Baking soda paste should be used once or twice a day over a one-week period. The process should only be repeated after a few months, and only if the teeth need to be whitened again.

Like hydrogen peroxide, baking soda is no substitute for brushing the teeth with toothpaste.

3. Use a prescription or over-the-counter teeth whitening kit

Teeth whitening kits come as strips, dental trays or as bottles of bleaching gel. Buy a whitening kit and apply the bleach onto the teeth per the directions of the dentist or the product label. For the best results, get the advice of a dentist before buying and using a teeth whitening kit at home.

Remember that it might take a while

At-home teeth whitening is a process that takes time, which is fine because some of the things you do to whiten your teeth should be part of a routine. Professional teeth whitening may be a one-off treatment, but whitening the teeth at home should be a normal activity that is a part of your long-term oral care regimen.
