The Importance of Checkups With Your General Dentist

Visiting general dentists is important because it can help your teeth stay healthy. It is important to catch potential problems early on. Regular visits will help find and fix minor problems before they become major problems. Read on to learn more.
What are visits to general dentists like?
During a visit to a general dentist, there are two parts. These are the examination and the cleaning of the teeth. During the examination portion of the visit, the dentist will look for cavities. Depending on the patient’s oral history, the dentist may take X-rays every few visits.
Dental examination
The dentist will also look for tartar and plaque on the teeth. Plaque is sticky and consists of bacteria that can harden into tartar. Tartar cannot be removed with flossing and brushing because it is too hard. To remove the tartar, the dentist must use a special tool to scrape it off the teeth. The tartar and plaque must be removed because they can cause oral disease otherwise.
The dentist will also check the patient’s gums during the visit. The dentist will use a special tool that will measure the space between the teeth and the gums. There should not be any pockets between the gums and the teeth. If there are, this can be a sign of gum disease. Bacteria can hide in these pockets and cause more inflammation.
Finally, the dentist may examine the throat, tongue, face, neck and head. This can help the dentist find potential signs of cancer. Any swelling or redness can be found during this examination.
Dental cleaning
The dentist will also clean the patient’s teeth at the visit. While brushing and flossing are important, this cannot remove all of the plaque and tartar from the teeth. The dentist can use tools to remove the plaque and tartar. This is known as scaling.
The dentist will also polish the teeth after the scaling process is done. The dentist will use a gritty paste to accomplish this. This can remove stains from the teeth. Finally, the dentist will floss the teeth to clean the areas between the teeth. This is another chance for the dentist to look for early signs of gum disease. If the gums bleed during flossing, this may be an early sign of gum disease.
The dentist can show patients the right way to brush and floss the teeth. A dentist may help a patient choose the right type of toothbrush and toothpaste for the teeth. If a patient is susceptible to cavities, the dentist may recommend an anti-cavity mouthwash. On the other hand, if a patient is susceptible to gum disease, the dentist may recommend an antibacterial mouthwash.
