How General Dentists Become Invisalign® Providers

Invisalign Visalia, CA

Invisalign® allows you to deal with teeth alignment issues without announcing your treatment to the world. It involves using clear aligner trays that are barely visible in the patient's mouth. It is a huge difference from traditional metal braces, which involve using highly conspicuous metal brackets and wires that can ruin smiles.

Getting Invisalign® treatments from a general dentist

General dentists provide a wide range of dental treatments, including teeth straightening treatments that involve Invisalign® clear aligners. Dentists have the training to administer the use of orthodontic appliances like metal braces and Invisalign®, and many add to their skills with continuing education and experience earned over the years.

Dentists who work with Invisalign® get designations to indicate their level of experience. These are:

  • Preferred: This designation is for dentists who treat at least 10 cases each year
  • Premier: This is for dentists who treat a minimum of 25 cases every six months and 50 cases each year
  • Premier Elite: This designation of reserved for dentists who treat over 50 cases every six months and a minimum of 300 each year
  • Super elite: This is reserved for the top 1% of Invisalign® providers; they spend a great deal of their time administering treatments with Invisalign®

The process

Getting Invisalign® treatments starts with a consultation with a dentist. The dentist might use diagnostic tests like X-rays to get a better idea of what is going on underneath the patient's gums. During this appointment, the dentist assesses the patient's teeth alignment issues and educates them about their options. Clear aligners can be used to address dental issues like:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbites
  • Crossbites
  • Underbites
  • Crowded teeth

The dentist will take digital images of the patient's teeth and use that to create projections of what treatment will look like over time. Once both parties are satisfied, the information is sent to a dental lab that makes Invisalign® treatments. The patient will get several trays to start their treatment. Each tray is slightly different and is worn for only two weeks. After that, it is replaced with another that pushes the patient's teeth closer to the desired position. The patient should wear their Invisalign® aligners for at least 20 hours each day for effective treatment.

The benefits that patients who opt for Invisalign® treatments get to enjoy include:

  • It provides a subtle way to straighten teeth; Invisalign® clear braces are transparent, making them hard to notice
  • Invisalign® provides a more comfortable way to straighten teeth; the forces applied to the patient's teeth are gradually increased every two weeks
  • It does not promote tooth decay, as is the case with metal braces
  • Invisalign® aligners are removable, so it does not get in the way of meals
  • Invisalign® trays are less likely to irritate the soft tissues in the mouth
