Types of Invisalign® Attachments
Invisalign was originally created to be a treatment option for patients looking to close small gaps or correct minorly crooked teeth. However, as modern dentistry has continued to evolve, there are now options for treating more severe dental problems through Invisalign. Through the use of Invisalign attachments, patients with major imperfections can also make use of the popular clear aligners.
Invisalign attachments can help ensure that treatment goes smoothly and efficiently. There are two types used in conjunction with Invisalign, one is called attachments and the other is buttons. Ready to find out more?
Invisalign attachment options
Outlined below are some specifics on Invisalign attachment options.
What are Invisalign attachments and when are they needed?
Invisalign attachments are used to create force where more severe movements are required. When the teeth have major gaps, or if they run into one another, they require more anchor points where force needs to be applied. In the case of Invisalign, buttons and attachments help make that force happen.
Invisalign attachments and buttons are similar to the use of rubber bands for traditional braces. Rubber bands allow the teeth to be shifted in a more forceful manner, whereas buttons and attachments give the aligners more support to do the same thing. Both options are beneficial to the Invisalign treatment and in some scenarios, patients may even need both.
Just like with traditional braces, the general dentist will perform regular adjustments to ensure that the Invisalign is working well with the chosen attachment. As the treatment plan progresses, the buttons or attachments may be removed.
Attachments
Invisalign attachments are used frequently during the treatment process. They are small, tooth-colored bumps that are bonded onto the front of the teeth. Not all of the teeth will receive attachments, but the ones that need to shift will. Once placed, the attachments allow the Invisalign to grip onto each one, holding the aligner in place. This also allows for guidance towards the desired position, which may not be achievable with just Invisalign.
Buttons
Buttons are the other type of Invisalign attachment that general dentists offer. They are extremely tiny auxiliaries that act as anchors for elastic rubber bands. Similar to traditional braces, Invisalign makes use of rubber bands when additional force needs to be applied. They are often tooth-colored to ensure discreteness, however, if they are placed in the back of the mouth, they may be metal-colored.
The goal of buttons is to ensure functionality. While Invisalign targets appearance, it is also important to ensure a good bite. The elastic rubber bands, otherwise known as buttons, help promote a more even bite by guiding the arches so that patients can chew normally.
